So this will be the first of my Step by Step tutorial series I hope to do this year. The Step by Step series will be super simplified click by click tutorials and walk-throughs, or as close as I can get without writing a whole novel.
This first one is nice and easy and is pretty much a direct copy from Michel Oosterhof's setup guide HERE on Github. I've added a couple of notes at the start for my own reference.

Almost the end of January and this is my first post of 2018!
Looking back my blog postings have certainly been intermittent at best so I'm going to layout a plan for the year and aim to stick to it. I also see my blog had around 30 visits this last week. From who I do not know but it's nice to think some people find the information here interesting. Click more for schedule and project details. No, seriously, It's a nightmare trying to find the time!
But anyway, I've been out of IT for a while now and just about to start a new job. I've had a couple of weeks spare so as well as getting back up to speed for the new job I'm re-deploying my home lab kit. Got further than I did last time and now running a honeypot (not on the internet yet), as well as Security Onion with the ELK stack, so I can make some pretty dashboards. Anyway, that's what I've done so far today. I will be posting more in the coming days as things come together and will put some structured posts up, possibly on DNS blacklisting on PfSense, Kibana dashboard creation, future projects and ........ stuffs. So, as I previously mentioned, I'm currently re-certifying my CCNA qualification and running through the ICND2 study guide.
Having worked through the first major section, which covers VLANs, STP and VTP (as well as some misc items) I wanted to incorporate this into GNS3. My primary reason for this is that Cisco Packet Tracer, while handy and free, doesn't simulate some features properly and is missing some functionality. I prefer to be working with something more realistic so set about setting up a switch in GNS3. So I have to Europe after two years travelling and working in New Zealand and Australia and am now living in France.
I'm currently working on re-certifying my CCNA, which expired while travelling and so will be posting anything I think of that's related to my studies as I go. Interestingly my Weebly dashboard says I have had 5 unique visitors to my blog in the last week. As there's only two semi-useful posts on here that's pretty good going but I'm also paranoid enough to play around with setting up Google Analytics for the future. Anyhow, anyone lurking in the dark corners, feel free to say hello in the comments. ... and I wouldn't even call myself a linux super user. Even user would be pushing it if I didn't use a linux or *nix based system pretty much every day at work. If you are a linux user and comfortable with basic disk management, you can safely skip this post.
So my Netgear ReadyNAS decided to unmount itself as a datastore in my ESXi host today. I did have a similar issue previously but had thought that was related to a firmware upgrade, now it appears it is just unstable. Not entirely sure what I'll be doing with it but it's clear it cannot continue as a datastore for my persistent VM drives. The up side of this is I get to rebuild Secuirty Onion (SO) on the Shuttle and blog about doing so. This is my first proper post and I'm still playing with the blog building features I have available so bear with me on this. This post will just cover the hardware I'm using in my home rig at the moment and I'll start covering some of the software side of things in my next post.
First up then, my shiny new pfSense firewall. This is the VK-T40E, with the 30GB mSATA upgrade as I will most likely be installing additional packages onto the firewall, including squid and snort. Hello,
Welcome to The blog of sludge3000. As you can probably tell, I'm quite new to the whole blogging thing. Personally I see it as an easy way to set myself goals and stick to them as well as to encourage me to learn more and share my knowledge with others. I will probably be faffing around with the functionality available to me over the next few posts so please accept this apology in advance for the likely dodgy photos and formatting that will appear. I will tell you now that I am not a writer and I have never been very creative, so if you're looking for a fun read and aren't interested in the subject matter, this probably isn't the blog for you. To start us off I will hopefully be posting in a few days about my new setup at home. I'll provide full details of everything I have once it's all setup but in summary it's the same kit I've had for at least 6 months now but I've moved it to a different room and bought a physical device for my pfSense firewall. All the details and some photos will come in another post, hopefully later this week. Again, welcome to the blog, I hope you find it useful. sludge |
