This is my first proper post and I'm still playing with the blog building features I have available so bear with me on this. This post will just cover the hardware I'm using in my home rig at the moment and I'll start covering some of the software side of things in my next post. First up then, my shiny new pfSense firewall. This is the VK-T40E, with the 30GB mSATA upgrade as I will most likely be installing additional packages onto the firewall, including squid and snort. As you can see above, the device arrived in one piece and has sufficient packaging to keep it safe in transit. I ordered the pfSense die cut sticker as well, it didn't come free but I really liked the hand signed packing note with "Thank You" written across it. The case has a smooth metalwork finish with the pfSense logo in white on the front of the case. And all the ports are on the back. While continuing to eagerly unpack the rest of the box, itching to turn the device on and get it configured (as this was replacing my pfSense virtual device) it suddenly dawned on me that open source projects certainly have a lot fewer resources available to them than the large manufacturer's and we usually take this for granted. This next picture shows you what I mean. For anyone else in the UK looking to purchase a VK-T40E, you'll be looking for a power adapter which takes ~240v AC input and provides an output of 12V DC and at least two amps. I got mine from top link on Amazon. The adapter I got was a 3 amp output, which is fine for the 2 amps required by the pfSense. Now that my pfSense had life, it was time to add it to the stack. For those of you who are confused, I am a UK resident, those plugs don't work here! So in a fit of consumer rage, I rushed to the internet and purchased a UK adapter on expedited delivery. Two days later and I had this: The pfSense box is the smallest, so it gets to sit at the top of the pile on top of:
Cisco ASA 5505 - Old piece of kit I've had around since studying for my CCNA Security. Currently it's overkill for it's role as a switch but all my other switches are noisy as hell. In the near future I'll be looking to see what extra value I can get out of this device where it is. Shuttle XH97V - I picked this up last year and it has been a right treat. Packing an i7, 16GB of RAM and about 1.5TB of disk space, this is my ESXi host. And to the left is a Netgear ReadyNAS. This is a two disk model with 2 x 1TB Western Digital Red NAS HDD, for general storage and extended storage for some of the virtual machines. On my next post, I will introduce a few of the VM's I am running (If I have them working) and will try and cover a few of the problems I encountered while getting them setup. sludge3000
